the sanctuary at Havranok

Fragment na zdjęciu to widok na centralną część sanktuarium znajdującego się w połowie wysokości wzgórza Havranok, Liptovská Mara. Jest jedno z nielicznych znanych w środkowej Europie sanktuariów celtyckich, oraz jedno z bardzo nielicznych rekonstruowanych założeń tego typu.

Widoczne słupy totemiczne wraz z ich dekoracją rzeźbiarska to możliwa interpretacja odnalezionych w trakcie prac wykopaliskowych jam posłupowych, ponieważ oczywiście oprócz wyjątkowych warunków, wszelkie elementy drewniane się nie zachowują. Oryginalny jest natomiast "bruk" wyłożony między dwoma rzędami słupów.

Od strony wschodniej (o ile wierzyć pamięci i wyczuciu kierunków autorki zdjęć), czyli od strony bramy wjazdowej (tak, tak, sanktuarium było przynajmniej częściowo ufortyfikowane, a na pewno otoczone murem, zresztą zdjęcie było robione z wieżyczki zwieńczającej bramę) znajduje się jama na dary wotywne, czyli najprawdopodobniej najbardziej święte miejsce w oczach Celtów, które jednak współcześni (idioci) traktują jako idealne miejsce na śmietnik!

Obok jamy ustawiono pień zwieńczony czaszką wołu, gdyż zapewne znajdowało się tu jakieś przedstawienie (szeroko rozumiane) bóstwa, któremu poświęcony był ten obiekt).

Na stanowisku odnaleziono szczątki siedmiu osób- nie jest to wcale duża liczba jeśli brać pod uwagę takie założenia jak choćby Gournay-sur-Aronde i pamiętać należy, że choć zapewne stanowili rytualne ofiary, to równie dobrze mogli być zwykłymi przestępcami, których w ten sposób postanowiono ukarać. Nie byłoby znowu tak nieprawdopodobne, gdyż takie właśnie praktyki wiązane są z germańskimi, bagiennymi ofiarami, o czym wzmiankują także pisarze antyczni. Niestety nie znam żadnych danych dot. płci, czy wieku odnalezionych na Havranoku osób.

Zresztą co warte podkreślenia głównymi darami składanymi w sanktuarium były narzędzia rolnicze (stąd powiązanie ofiar z ewentualnymi rytuałami zapewniającymi pomyślność plonów), ale także same płody rolne oraz liczna elementy biżuterii odnajdywane w pobliżu słupów, gdzie, sądząc po śladach przepalenia, były wrzucane w ogień.

Dobra tyle na temat sanktuarium, sorki jeśli wyszedł mi z tego cały wykład i jeśli wpadałam w archeologiczny slang.

Całe wzgórze stanowi zresztą muzeum i przykład archeologii eksperymentalnej. Zachęcam do odwiedzenia tej urokliwej okolicy. ^^

Liptovská Mara, Slovakia

The fragment you see on the pic is the part of the central area of the Celtic sanctuary at the middle hight of Havranok hill near Liptovska Mara. It is one of few known such objects in this part of Europe and one of even fewer group of reconstructed sacred sites of prehistoric times.

The totemic columns with their decoration are of course just possible interpretation of the site look, based on the pit-holes found during the archaeological research, as of course wooden elements are hardly ever so long-lasting.
Original is however the paving in between the two lines of the poles.

On the east from the paving (if you trust the memory and sense of direction of the photos author ), meaning from the side of the entrance gate (the sanctuary was probably fortified, or at least walled and the photo was actually taken from the little pinnacle over the gate), there is the most sacred (probably) in the mind of the ancient Celts area- the the votive pit, which is now used by the brainless tourists as a thrush container!!!

Aside (right) from the pit there is an large part of the tree trunk decorated with the ox cranium (skull). It was put there as it is possible that truly near the votive pit there could have been an image (widely understood) of the deity that the whole place was dedicated to.

At the site the remains of several (about seven) people were found. Comparing to such places as sanctuaries as i.e. Gournay-sur-Aronde, that is not a great number. Moreover it should also be taken under consideration, that the victims made to be the human sacrifices were before criminals, who were punished in that way. Such practices are known in case of the bod victims known in Germanic cultures, which was also mentioned by ancient writers. Unfortunately I have no data about the sex and age structure within the people whose remains were found at Havranok and such knowledge of course would be crucial here.

What is worth to be marked, is that the main offering was not weapon as in case of West Europe sanctuaries, but the agronomic (sorry if I'm using wrong word) tools, found also in the central pit with the human remains, which is often interpreted as the part of some fertility/good harvest rites.
The great group of votive object is also made by the jewellery and the grain/produce found burnt near the pillar pits.
